The port of Trapani connects Sicily with the other regions of Italy as well as with the rest of the Mediterranean. Trapani is located at the center of the Mediterranean Sea, equidistant from the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar making it a central hub on most routes between the north south of these waters. This position makes it crucial for commercial and passenger sea transport on ferries and cruise ships.
The port of Trapani generated the development of the city and was initially built by the Carthaginians who developed the surrounding houses as residences for the workers. In the following centuries, the city continued to expand from the port inland, when you get off the boat in Trapani, you are catapulted directly into the historic city center.
It is in fact called City Port, due to the close connection to the historical center. There are many services available within the port area, from catering to tourist information.
