Tenerife is an island in the Atlantic Ocean and part of the Canary archipelago which is considered Spanish territory. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites on the island, the city of San Cristobal de la Laguna and the Teide National Park which contains the third largest volcano in the world.
History
Tenerife is internationally known for the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival, which is considered the second in the world. The Romans called it Nivaria, referring to the snow that covers the tops of the Teide volcano. The island was also known as Isola dell'Inferno, again because of the Vulcano whose eruptions have made the island look like hell. Strangely, in ancient times Tenerife was inhabited by prehistoric animals that had shared the characteristic of gigantism there was the giant rat, the giant lizard and the giant tortoise.
