Lipsi is a small island in the Dodecanese that seems to have been forgotten by international tourism and the rest of the world. The island is around seventeen square kilometres and mainly consists of barren hills and surrounded by various islets. The islets form a small group of islands named Aspronissi, Macronissi, Frago, Plavi and Calapodia, they are easily reachable from Lipsi and Leros. The island's landscape is characterized by palm trees, vineyards and fruit trees and its inhabitants live on agriculture and farming. You even see the Lipsi goats scattered among the rows of olive trees and tomatoes that are grown everywhere on the island.
History
The island has passed through domination from various civilisations including the Dori, Romans, Byzantines then Veneziani and Turchi. This island has many churches and monasteries to visit, there is Agios Ioannis, which has a blue dome and is really beautiful, going inland up the Kimissi mountain there is a sixteenth century church dedicated to the 'Sleep of the Virgin Mary'.
Lipsi wine festival
The island is a perfect destination for those who love good food, Lipsi is famous for its wine and for the production of oil, tomatoes and honey. So every year in August there is a Wine Festival, where you can taste local produce accompanied by a nice glass of local wine.
Beaches
The beauty of Lipsi lies in its unspoilt nature and as for the beaches this island does not disappoint, there are bays, coves and beaches of all kinds scattered everywhere. The bays of Tourkomnima and Xerokambos, to the south of the island, have white pebbles whereas Platis Ghialos and Katsadia are shallow and sandy, so they are perfect for families with children.
