Guide of Kea

Kea is one of the largest islands in the Cyclades archipelago and has been a Greek tourist destination due to the proximity of the Eleftherios Venizelos airport in Athens. The island is dry and barren especially in the summer, during which the 'meltemi' wind blows over this part of Aegean, to the great joy of the surfers! Despite the high temperatures that can be reached during the day, in the  the evening there is a pleasant breeze in this village that remains clinging onto the highest hill on the island.

History

The island was rediscovered in the last century when in 1916, the Britannica, the sister of the Titanic, shipwrecked here. The wreck is preserved on the island and it is still possible to visit it. Of course Kea has a history that goes much further back than this. In Greek mythology the name of the island is linked to water nymphs that dwelt here in ancient times when the island was green and lush. The gods became jealous of the beauty of the island and to hunt the nymphs they made it dry, so the inhabitants had to ask for help from Zeus who re-established peace by making Kea livable again.

Places to visit

The main attraction on the island is a huge stone lion also known as Lionda, it is sculpted directly onto a rock and therefore available for all to see. The island is a real gem and has not yet been exploited by mass tourism, you can still perceive an authentic Greek atmosphere here that recalls ancient Greece. The houses on the island are not typical of the Cyclades, but are instead built to resist the winds and perfectly camouflage into the surrounding barren landscape.

Beaches

Those looking for peace and relaxation and a mindful type of tourism will find this island perfect. There are many villages to be explored throughout the island, each with its own characteristics. The beaches are of course wonderful, even if they are not as famous as those of the other Cyclades islands. There are many coves and caves still to be discovered in addition to the better known beaches of Otzias, Korissia and Koundouros, where you can find all kinds of water sports.
