The Tremiti Islands: 5 great beaches
The Tremiti Islands are a little paradise on earth, situated just off the coast of the Gargano, in Puglia. The Tremiti Archipelago consists of five islands of San Nicola, San Domino, Capraia and the uninhabited islets of Cretaccio and Pianosa. The landscape on the Tremiti islands is particularly interesting and varied and so you have both shallow, sandy beaches in bays and on headlands, but you also have rocky stretches of coastline with cliffs overlooking the deep blue sea. Diving and snorkelling are great around the islands and there is both natural marine beauty and underwater archaeological sites to discover - even shallows it is possible to come across colourful sponges, sea hedgehogs and starfish.
There is something for everyone, as the Tremiti Islands are both an ideal place for those looking for relaxation but with plenty of culture and history to also explore. For example, on the Island of San Nicola, there are plenty of historic walls, forts and towers that recall the history of the islands, which in the past were a stopover between the Balkan Peninsula and Italy and were subject to many invasions. The islands have also been used as places to deport prisoners to, even up to recent times. Netferry recommends 5 great beaches on the Tremiti Islands:
1. Cala Matano, San Domino
A fascinating, wild beach surrounded by rich vegetation and limestone cliffs that plunge into the sea. The sea around the cove is turquoise, crystal clear and easily accessible along a path.
2. Cala delle Arene, San Domino
A small sandy beach in front of the Grotta dell'Arenile.
3. Pagliai Beach, San Domino
It is the perfect beach even for those who can't swim but still want to enjoy the extraordinary turquoise waters. The seabed is sandy and shallow and there are some beautiful stacks going into the sea - this is one of the most photographed beaches in the entire archipelago. It can only be reached by sea but is well equipped with bathing services.
4. Cala Del Diavolo, Cretaccio
The rocks around this beach are made of clay, due to the presence of minerals in the water, this beach became popular for its health-giving properties.
5. Cala dei Turchi, Caprara
This beach is located in the north of the island and there is a rocky cave inside a sheltered cove. One of the most important marine wrecks in the Archipelago is also located off this beach. Netferry also recommends taking a boat tour to visit two fascinating caves named Grotta delle Viole and Grotta del Bue Marino. The waters are shallow inside the caves and the reflected sunlight creates charming blue and green hues.
