Guide of Livorno

Livorno, on the Tuscan coast, is one of those intriguing seaside cities that are just full of history.

History

Livorno’s origins date back to the Roman era, but its port was built later under Cosimo I de 'Medici. By the middle of the 1500s, it had begun to be an important port city for trade, because of the breakdown of the neighbouring port of Pisa. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, Livorno developed architecturally and was given a fort and a majestic lighthouse.

The Medici declared the city free port and this also attracted people from everywhere such as Jews, Spanish, Muslims, and the English, the city became a melting pot of culture. In 1700, under the Lorraine, Livorno also developed in terms of art and publishing. Sadly, during the Second World War bombings destroyed lots of the historic centre and many ancient buildings.

Places to see

The Old Fortress is an interesting complex that dates back to 1500, full of artefacts from the Etruscan period. In the port area, you can admire the Pisan port towers, the main light and the torraccia. In Livorno it is worth visiting the Jewish and the Greek Orthodox ceremonies along with other religious and architectural buildings. For example the Duomo, the Famedio-Marian shrine and San Gregorio Illuminatore, the Armenian church. Not far from the train station there are the thermal baths from the early twentieth century. Also, Fortezza Nuova is home to many events and events and don’t miss the Terrazza Mascagni for a beautiful panorama over the Livorno sea.

Beaches

The Livorno coast is the widest and longest in the region, it alternates between sandy and rocky stretches of uncontaminated beach. In Ardenza there are several very nice rock and gravel beaches that are embellished with some neoclassical buildings. For example, Accademia beach and the Beaches of Fiumea and Spiaggia del Selciaio are great. Do not miss a swim in the sea at Castiglioncello which has clear water and some rocks upon which you can sunbathe. Rada del Saraceno is a white sandy beach, surrounded by pine forests, there is also a camping area located in Cecina.
